Teachers in a Muncie have agreed to repay the school district $700,000 for underpayment of health insurance premiums for the two previous school years.
The Muncie Community Schools system announced a deficit of $11.5 million at the beginning of 2016. By 2019, that shortfall is expected to reach $37.7 million.
For the year ending June 30, 2017, teacher resignations at MCS totaled 102 — 36 percent higher than average compared to recent years. Resignations include retirement and transfers to other schools. Eighty more teachers resigned during the year ending June 30, 2016. The current number of teachers at MCS has dropped below 400.
Negotiations are beginning for a new health insurance plan.
